Sheathing

It took forever, but we finally got the sheathing installed on the lake side and the wall along the side of our bedroom.  We were hoping to wrap it and get the windows and new French doors installed, but we ran out of time.  We got it all spray foamed so it will be fairly weather tight until we get up there again next weekend.  It's a real pain not having a back door!

Siding Removal

Today we started on the lake side wall.  We got all the vinyl siding down pretty quickly.  But the OSB sheathing under it took forever.  They used ring shank nails which were a real bugger to get out.  As you can see the cedar siding that was originally used didn't have any sheathing under it at all.  That is why we are going through all this work.

Wrap and Windows

After lunch we got the wrap and windows done on the west wall as well.  These windows were replaced by the previous owners and still had the stickers on them from when they were purchased in 2009.  They were still in good shape, so we decided to reuse them.  I hope we don't regret that decision in a couple years.

Wrap and Windows

This morning we got the wrap and windows done on the street side wall.  It is so nice to finally have windows again!  The door is also installed and we don't need to remove it again.  I used some flashing tape to make a pan for the bottom of the door as well, so we will not have a moisture problem either.

Wrap and Windows

Now we are starting to get somewhere.  The house wrap is on the east wall, the windows are installed and flashed.  We got these 2 windows installed just before the major rain storm hit!  Lucky for us the tools had been picked up already.  This storm hit so fast we didn't have time to even think before we were getting soaked.

Sheathing

After lunch today, we managed to get the sheathing up, which was not easy.  The top corner near the lake is about 14' off the ground, so getting a sheet of plywood up there took some work.  We measured down from the top 4' and nailed a 2x4 to the wall parallel to the ground.  That gave us a support for the sheathing while we screwed it in place.

Siding Removal

We worked on one of the most difficult sides of the cabin this morning.  Not only do we have the very large pine tree in the way, but the ground slopes towards the lake and towards the cabin so setting up ladders is very difficult.  But we managed to get all the old siding off and everything looks good.

Sheathing

After lunch we managed to get the new plywood sheathing up and screwed in.  It has also been spray foamed through all the seams and most of the cracks and gaps have been filled.  When we start on the siding, we'll get some new battens for the gable peak as they were all removed when the vinyl siding was installed.  The new windows should be here this week as well!

Siding Removal

Today we decided to work on the west wall of the cabin.  The girls went to Nana's while Kelly and I tore into it.  This side had a layer of vinyl siding as well as the original cedar under it.  Around the windows had been redone not long before we bought the cabin, so that was sheathed in OSB with ring shank nails.  It was a real pain in the butt to pull down.

Sheathing

We spent the morning finishing the sheathing on the street side.  There were some gaps where we had to work around the electrical boxes as well as the remainder of the screws to hold everything nice and tight to the wall.  I also installed the outside outlet, the porch light and the 2 security cameras.  Next weekend we'll start on the east and west side walls.

Siding Removal

Now that the plumbing is done, it's time to get moving on the outside of the house.  We pulled all the old siding off the street side.  We managed to get the sheathing hung before bed time, but there is still quite a bit of work to do tomorrow.  There are only a few screws holding several sheets up and there are tons of gaps to fill.  It's coming along well though.

Spring Cleaning

We spent the weekend cleaning both inside and outside the cabin.  The girls got a bunch of old rotting wood loaded out from under the deck and into the trailer while we cleaned up the driveway.  We had 3 roaring fires going almost all day and we still have more to burn next weekend.  But the pine needles and cones are all picked up.  It looks great!

State Inspections

We passed our Plumbing Rough-In and our HVAC/Mechanical Final inspections today!  That means all the inspections required before cover up are done and passed.  So next weekend we will start working on ripping off the siding and getting some sheathing up on the cabin.  We also got the windows ordered and should have them in a couple weeks.
